Interesting pieces Annelise. Both have a strong voice and cool editorial statements. I think the bottom piece is stronger and clearer in execution. The rubik cube to me is less visually clear. Maybe if the dark graphite areas were inked, they would better stand up to the surrounding textures of watercolor and color pencil(?). I think the color and values are working, but i think the textures are distracting from the piece.
By the way, Katie Stoltze and I are trying to get to some SOI life drawing nights if you are interested.
I agree with Brendan's sentiment about some areas of the Rubik's cube looking a little unclear. Most specifically, the faces in the blue squares are a little hard to distinguish, but that's nothing that couldn't be fixed with some bolder linework.
I'm digging both of these. I think your exploration of repeat patterns have led to some very cool and interesting stylistic changes in your work. It's also interesting to see how the broad goofy humor of your earlier stuff has evolved into something that is much more subtle and satirical.
